Beschreibung: We are permanently surrounded by it and feel disconnected from the world if it’s not available: the Internet. The Internet in fact has changed the ways in which we communicate, shop and exchange, work and play, search for company, browse global headlines or the menu of our local pub. The Internet has freed us from the limitations of our own small local worlds and opened up the globe. At the same time it continually absorbs our attention and engages us in compulsive searching, linking, and up-dating. This seminar explores these ambivalent impacts of the Internet, and examines the following issues. Governance: Who owns the Internet? Space: Does the Internet erode urbanity? Sociality: Gemeinschaft or Gesellschaft? Production: Wikis, open-source, and user communities. Transaction: Market-places, file-sharing, and streaming. Interaction: Social network sites, online-dating, and blogs.
