Beschreibung: Biophilic Cites: The potential of Hamburg’s neighorhoods In his 1984 monograph „Biophilia“, biologist and conservationist Edward O. Wilson explores the hypothesis that all human beings feel a bond and seek contact to living beings, flora and fauna. His book inspired disciplines like Psychology, Architecture, and Urban Planning and gave rise to the „Biophilic Cities“ movement (www.biophiliccities.org). Its aim is to create room for plants and animals in the city, to meet urbanites’ needs and enhance biodiversity. – We familiarize ourselves with the biophilia hypothesis, looking at the empirical evidence for its validity and exploring strategies in architecture and urban planning to make cities biophilic. We then apply this knowledge to selected Hamburg neighborhoods, identifying potential for creating room for flora and fauna. – The topic is vital for Hamburg right now, as the city is losing green spaces at a fast pace. – The course is open for exchange students and students of other programmes. We will use a mix of English and German materials and allow parts of the final report being written in English in order to accommodate international students with limited knowledge of German.
