Beschreibung: Thematical scope: In the recent five decades societies are charaterized by a fundamental shift towards knowledge societies. Knowledge has become a fundamental driver of productivity gains in modern economies but also spatial structural changes in many cities. Cities have not only been spatially differentiated according to their ability to benefit from the knowledge shift but they also have in their spatial strategies actively utilized knowledge based strategies e.g. from clusters, to triple-helix-concepts and science city concepts. The seminar provides a theoretical overview of fundamental basics and practical planning approaches and includes a study trip to science based locations in Hamburg. Description and Procedure: The seminar focusses with readings, discussions and a field trip on the the following major topics: a) Theoretical basics: In the first sessions we discuss the features of knowledge societies, the topic of agglomeration economics as a fundamental process utilizing knowledge and the processes of creating knowledge diffusion e.g. via proximity and pipelines. b) The Institutional Frameworks: The following sessions are organized according to fundamental concepts and typologies of planned knowledge considering different institutions, e.g. clusters, triple-helix-concepts and typologies of university and science cities. c) The systems of knowledge spaces: The third group of sessions will concentrate on planning different types of knowledge spaces and the ways synergies between institutiuons and cities are created. Different case studies form the core of the sessions. d) Observing knowledge spaces: Field trips visiting a cluster based location and the new sites of the planned Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld will complete the seminar.

Vorkenntnisse/ Voraussetzungen für die Teilnahme: • Attendance and active cooperation in the lecture • Proper preparation of all mandatory papers • Participation in the field trip
Voraussetzung für die Vergabe von CP: 1) Exkursionsprotokoll (25%) 2) Moderation einer Sitzung (25%): Vorstellung eines der Forschungsthemen anhand eines Aufsatzes (ergänzt um weiteres Hintergrundmaterial) und Moderation der Sitzung. 3) Mündliche Prüfung (50%) setzt Kenntnisse aller Aufsätze, der begleitenden Präsentationen und der Diskussionen voraus. Max. 45 Minuten je max. 2 Teilnehmer. Abgabetermin: Exkursionsprotokoll 14 Tage nach Exkursion per E-Mail. Mündliche Prüfung: Prüfungstermine innerhalb einer Woche nach Abschluss des Seminars: 12. Juli oder 19.07 Juli im Haus der HCH Osakaallee 11.
