Beschreibung: Many cities in "countries of the global south" are facing rapid growth accompanied by radical social, economic, ecologic and spatial upheavals. The course provides an overview of global urbanisation processes and challenges associated with the transformation of societies. Theoretical concepts are reviewed within the specific context of selected countries. Focus topics are urban infrastructure, mobility, resources, housing, informal settlements, poverty, sustainable development, climate change and migration. These general issues are observed using the specific cases of the metropolitan areas of Manila/ Philippines and Buenos Aries/ Argentina as examples for cities located in low income and middle income countries. While the United Nation development goals set the background of analysis, the history of development cooperation shall be critically reflected. Objectives: · Knowledge on major issues of urban development and transformation in emerging and developing countries · Introduction of development cooperation as potential professional specialization for urban planners Selected books will guide the course, available in the HCU library (Semesterapparat): - Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2012): Why Nations Fail. The origins of power, prosperity and poverty. (Available in English and German language) - Daron Acemoglu & James A. Robinson (2019): The Narrow Corridor: States, Societies, and the Fate of Liberty (Available in English) - Johan Norberg (2016). Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future. (Available in English and German language) Each student is expected to chose and discuss during the course one chapter (approx. 30 pages) of the publications mentioned above and to submit a final paper on a self selected topic in March 2021. These commitments can also be shared among groups of two participants. Eventually we will get some insights by part of experts of GIZ (German Development Cooperation) and researchers who specialize on urban development issues in foreign countries. The excursion to Eschborn/Frankfurt to the "GIZ Students' Day on Urban Development" (usually in November) is cancelled in 2020, due to the pandemic.
