Course Title
Sustainable Urban Development in International Cities: Urban Resilience for Sustainability

Course Description

Background on the problem.
Rapid urbanization and pressure on resources are rapidly growing while a changing climate and inadequate infrastructure are posing a significant challenge to the resilience of cities and societies. Disturbances caused by natural hazards, such as flooding, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions are inevitable and unexpected, or those which are human-made threats, such as war conflict have both evidenced to have long-term consequences for an urban system to bounce back to an optimal state. Over the past couple of decades, the concept of urban resilience has been adopted into social sciences, to better understand the current behavior of cities. Originally transferred from the field of Ecology (Holling, 1973), the term of resilience was coined as the capacity of a system to withstand subsequent disruptions without changing the structure of its original state. A more recent review on the term holds the idea that urban resilience should instead acknowledge its probability to adapt to change and transform in the face of a disturbance, and not necessarily return to its original state (Meerow, 2016).
Scope of the Course.
Urban resilience plays an important role, when understanding the challenges that we face ahead of rapidly changing urban dynamics. The positive impact of improving the resilience of urban systems, would directly contribute to the capacity of a city to mitigate risks, to the preparedness of its planners and authorities to reduce the areas exposed to threat and the time needed for the citizenship and the city system to recover from any unexpected event (Rezvani et al., 2023; Rezaei et al., 2023). If effectively managed, urban resilience can be then seen as the means to achieve the sustainability of an urban system over time. We will analyze such mitigation and adaptation plans for international cities facing natural and man-made hazards. Groups may choose two sectoral focus areas (e.g. water, energy, mobility, materials, waste or food) to trace sectoral planning and implementation in their respective case studies.
How we would work.
In REAP Project 1 students work in groups to analyze a specific city according to sub-themes of their choice. With a view to enhance the urban resilience of cities, towards more sustainable environments, students explore urban facts and figures, identify strengths and weaknesses of existing frameworks and methodologies for urban resilience in their selected cities and develop tailored recommendations for short, mid- and long-term improvements. The main aim of the project is to learn about the complex interaction of key strategies, actors and procedures for the sustainable planning of urban development.

Course Objectives

With the project students shall prove that they are able to work on bigger and interdisciplinary exercises in a short, fixed period. Core objectives are:
• Gain basic understanding of sustainable urban development with focus on urban water, energy, and material flows as well as the related strategies and measures towards urban resilience.
• Understanding the roles of city governments and communities in adaptation strategies (top-down & bottom-up approaches).
• Learn how to work in an interdisciplinary team.
• Acquire self-directed learning (researching, assessing, questioning, developing).
• Experience intercultural teamwork.
• Strengthen communication skills and scientific writing.
• Build up professional expertise (content, teamwork, presentation skills, time management).
